Rakkuli thirunal

Rakkuli-thirunal Rakkuli Thirunal is the terminology of Common parlance to denote the feast of Epiphany celebrated every year on the 6th January in the St. Thomas Cathedral Church at Pala. It has been the occasion of a vast fair where articles of every necessity are exhibited for sale.

The Feast of Denha which is celebrated on 6th January is called ‘Pindikuthiperunnal’ by faithful who live in the northern part of Kerala and ‘Rakkuli’ by people of the south. ‘Pindikuthiperunnal’ originated from the practice of going around the ‘vazhapindi’ decorated with lights and singing ‘God is light’ commemorating Jesus the light of the world. The name ‘Rakkuli’ came from the ritual bath that our forefathers used to have in the river or pool nearby, on the eve of the feast. It was a religious ceremony.

The festival symbolizes the Biblical account of the three wise men from the East, being led by a newborn star to infant Jesus in the manger of Bethlehem.
