Considered to be the mother of all Poorams, Arattupuzha Pooram falls on the month of April and is celebrated at the Sree Sastha Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayappa at Palakkad, Thrissur. The temple is believed to be 300 years old. The evening prior to the last day of the seven-day festival witnesses the assembling of Caparisoned elephants along with percussion known as Sasthavinte melam.
The traditional lit lamps and the presence of Theevetti (a huge flame carried by the staff) will provide a different feel. There will be Panchavadhyam, Pancharimelam, and Pandimelam along with around 50 caparisoned elephants bearing Muthukudas (sequined glittering umbrellas) and Venchamarams (white whisks). Then there is a ceremonial bath of the idol known as Arattu accompanied by mantras and floral offerings.
