Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma passes away
Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma (91), the last ruling monarch of the Kingdom of Travancore passed away today early morning at 2.20am.
Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, born on 22 March 1922, the head of the erstwhile royal family of Travancore and the Padmanabhaswamy temple, he was the younger brother to the last ruling monarch of the Kingdom of Travancore, Maharaja Chitra Thirunal Rama Varma.
Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma took over the reins of his family after the demise of his elder brother Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the last ruling king in 1991.
The ancestry of the royal family of Travancore can be traced to the Chera dynasty in South India. The first Maharaja of Travancore, Maharaja Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma gave away his kingdom to Padmanabha (or Vishnu) in 1750. Ever since then, the family has served the deity and heads the temple management.
Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma was known for his simplicity and the daily visits that he used to make to the Padmanabhaswamy temple before his health conditions worsened. He used to visit the temple before 7.30 in the morning every day.
