Padmasri Ammannur Madhava Chakyar no more

The magic of the blue eyes of Guru Ammannur Madhava Chakyar that had enthralled the connoiseurs of Koothu and Koodiyattam across his homestate and the world, will manifest no more.He died yesterday at the ripe old age of 91at his residence near Thrissur. The nephew of Ammannur Chachu Chakyar who was a treasure house of Koodiyattam had redefined the art form dating back to the 9th century.

This pioneer has done yeoman service in the art field and has gained wide acclaim in the country and abroad and this includes recognition like the Kalidas and Padmabhushan awards.A scholar and a deeply dedicated artiste,he has authored several “aattaprakaarams”and always had the last word in this particular dance-drama form.Patrons of art can never forget his poignant portrayal of the myriad characters in the hindu pantheon.Rightly referred to as the Last Kulapathy,his demise is being condoled by Malayalees and foreigners alike.
