Judges recuse from hearing Suryanelli case
A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court, comprising Justice KT Sankaran and Justice Joseph Francis, recused itself from hearing the Suryanelli rape case.
Justice P Bhavadasan had observed that the victim in the Suryanelli case should have been heard when a petition filed by the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, PJ Kurien, seeking to discharge him from the case was taken up for hearing. The court had in 2007 acquitted Kurien for lack of evidence.
The sex scandal took place at Suryanelli in Idukki in January 1996. Then woman, then a 16-year-old was threatened, abducted and abused by a bus conductor and was later confined and sexually assaulted for 45 days by 42 men.
