More universities needed in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,Feb.29 According to reports, states like Kerala would have to set up more universities if the centre decides to implement its new policy on higher education, State Education Minister M A Baby said on Thursday. The approach documents worked out by agencies like University Grants Commission had suggested that the total number of students under a university should not exceed 10,000, Baby told the state assembly on Thursday.
The document also suggested that the area covered by a university should be three districts at the most. If these suggestions are insisted upon, then more universities would have to be opened in the state, Baby said. The government had no immediate plan to set up any specialised university, he said in reply to a supplementary question. The proposed centre of excellence for Arabic studies would be coming under one of the existing universities.
