Geethu Mohandas – A Remarkable Journey

Geethu Mohandas have many peculiarities – she is an actress, who easily catches every minute behavior of the character and she is a director who knows how to make her work perfect and how to link it with the real life. The absence of Geethu was often felt in the industry, but truth is that, she was always here, behind the limelight, giving more exposure to the real life stories and socio-political issues prevailing here …

Geethu Mohandas originally Gayathri Mohandas started her career as a child artist in Raghunath Paleri’s ‘Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare’ in 1986. Who can forget the sweet little girl ‘Deepa Mol’ in that movie, who befriend with the ‘Telephone Uncle’ played by Mohanlal! The performance of Little Geethu in the movie was really appreciating and for that she got Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist.

Later she appeared in many other Malayalam movies and also in the Tamil remake of ‘Ente Mamaattikuttiyammaykku’. In the movie named ‘En Bommakutty Ammavukku’, Geethu played the role of Tinnu, which was enacted by Baby Shalini in the Malayalam version.

Then for years we didn’t saw Geethu Mohandas on screen. And then in the year 2000, she again appeared in Director Fazil’s movie ‘Life is Beautiful’. Movie lovers were surprised to see Geethu in her new look. The character of a naughty teenage girl done by Geethu in that movie was quite interesting. It was a coincidence that in her comeback she again enacted with Mohanlal. In the same year she got casted in Rafi Mecartin’s ever celebrated movie ‘Thenkashipattanam’.

From 2002 to 2003, she enacted in many movies. But majority of them didn’t do well in the box office. Some of the movies like Valkannadi, Shesham, Kannaki, Nala Damayanthi (Tamil) were milestones in her career. The movie ‘Sesham’ directed by T K Rajeev Kumar was a film which utilized the caliber of Geethu Mohandas as an actress. The role of ‘Meera’ was very safe in her hand. But the real turning point in Geethu’s life was yet to come.

When we see the movie ‘Akale’ directed by Shyamaprasad and observe the timid and introvert girl ‘Rose’ in it, we will feel that none other than ‘Geethu’ can handle such a role so beautifully. May be this will be the only film which has brought out the real ability of Geethu Mohandas. Her performance was really commendable. The role of Geethu in the movie ‘Oridam’ was also well received by the critics. For both these movies Geethu was honoured with Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress in 2004.

Geethu’s character ‘Malavika Varma’ in director Kamal’s movie ‘Rappakal’ had resemblances with writer Madhavikutty. She did the role very nicely. The movie, which got released in 2005, saw Mammootty and Nayanthara on lead. Geethu was also lucky enough to get casted in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s movie ‘Naalu Penuungal’. She enacted in the sequence ‘The Virgin’ in the movie.

Geethu got married to cinematographer Rajeev Ravi in the year 2009 and they have a daughter named ‘Aradhana’. She and her husband have worked in a movie named ‘Seetha Kalyanam’ directed by T K Rajeev Kumar in 2009. After 2009, Geethu was not seen in the silver screen. But when she decided to gave a break to her acting, she began to establish herself as a director.

In 2009 itself she directed a short film ‘Kelkunnundo’ means ‘Are You Listening’, which won the Golden Lamp Award for the Best Short Film category in the 2009 IFFI (International Film Festival of India). Her husband Rajeev Ravi was the cinematographer in her directional venture.

Her debut movie Liar’s Dice (Hindi) got released in 2013. This time also Rajeev was with her handling the camera work of the movie, which was shot in Himachal Pradesh. The movie was well received and even got special jury award in 18th Sofia International Film Festival. The film revolves around an extraordinary journey of an ordinary woman. Geethanjali Thapa got the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in this movie and also Rajeev Ravi bagged the award for Best Cinematographer.

Geethu Mohandas had a remarkable journey from a child artist to an actress then to an established director. There are only few women who had taken the challenge to stay behind the camera and to express their ideas through the big screen. Let’s hope the best from Geethu in future.
